Insured for your trip to Australia? Good. But are you insured for everything you’ll be getting up to?

We’ve discussed on these pages before the worrying fact that 30% of travellers aged between 16 and 24 think it’s ok to head off on holiday without insurance (it isn’t). And that 41% of all British travellers don’t think it’s necessary to buy travel insurance (it is).

But even if you’ve done the right thing and bought insurance for your holiday in Australia, you need to be aware that, increasingly, insurers are making us all more responsible for our actions as travellers.

The FCO has recently launched an awareness campaign asking British travellers ‘Are you appropriately covered?‘. The campaign highlights the importance of taking out the right policy for all your travel plans, and the potential costs that could be avoided if you have the right level of cover.

It’s not just the activities you’ll be getting up to (although you do need to make sure your insurance matches what you’re planning to do while you’re travelling Australia – you can read more about that here).

It’s about making sure that you’ve read the small print, especially the bits about declaring pre-existing medical conditions and the use of drinks and drugs. You may find that falling foul of either could mean your insurance is invalid – and that could be an expensive mistake.

As the FCO notes, the average cost of holiday insurance for an 18-30 year old is £23. The average claim is for £411. You’d be daft not to, wouldn’t you?
