A couple of months not enough to travel Australia? How about a lifetime?

According the Office of National Statistics, 43,000 people left the UK to live in Australia during 2013 (the most recent figures). Australia is the UK’s most popular emigration nation, with more than double the number of people heading to Oz than the second most popular destination, the US.

Yet for all those that leave, several thousand are back within a relatively short space of time. Why? Because they can’t settle. Because Christmas in summer is weird. Because their money doesn’t go half as far as they thought it would.

Getting emigration wrong is a big deal. It takes a huge amount of effort, time and cash to up sticks and start a new life somewhere else. Find out you’ve made a mistake and you can leave yourself out of pocket financially, emotionally and career-wise.

That’s why the FCO’s Know Before You Go has launched a campaign to encourage people to really do their homework before they choose to live abroad.

Not all the information on this infographic is relevant to a new life in Australia. You shouldn’t have too many problems understanding the language (although we can think of a few occasions when that might not be entirely true!). But from health to tax to finding a community where you feel at home, there’s lots to consider.

Did you travel Australia and decide to make it your home? Tell us why here.
