Botanic Gardens and The Domain

Need an escape from the bustle of the city? Explore Sydney’s Botanic Gardens and The Domain, where peace, relaxation and tranquillity are the order of the day.

The Royal Botanic Gardens
The oldest botanic gardens in Australia (and one of the more peaceful Sydney attractions) drape themselves over thirty lushly decorative hectares in the heart of the city.

Inside you’ll find an impressive collection of plants from Australia and around the world.

The Domain
Outside the gardens you’ll find The Domain, a vast unfenced area of parkland and playing fields with frankly staggering views of the harbour. No wonder so many of Sydney’s festivals take place here each year.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales
Occupying its present location in The Domain since 1897, the gallery is considered to be one of Australia’s finest and one of Sydney’s finest attractons. Over one million visitors a year pour through its doors in search of Aboriginal, European, Asian, and contemporary art – and a little air conditioning.

Those Aren't Birds...

Fruit bats/flying foxes have made the gardens their permanent camp. While that isn’t especially unusual, the numbers are.

It is estimated that around 22,000 bats inhabit the area, and you’ll see large numbers of them flying over the city in the evening.

Which is either a rather eerie sight or pretty darn cool, depending on your point of view.
