We’d planned to talk about technology. But given that we’re an Australian travel site, conversation inevitably always turns to Oz. That was particularly the case with Ash Dykes who, not content with crossing Mongolia, has also spent plenty of time in Australia.

We asked Ash whether he’d been to Australia, and what was still on his Australian bucket list. This is what he told us:

“Yes, I have been! After attempting to drive from Darwin to Cairns, taking the worst tracks we could find and the ones that weren’t on the map, the car broke down in a pretty extreme part of northern Australia; 13 hours went by before seeing our first car.

“The guy in the car said he wasn’t going to leave us there and that there was an aboriginal tribe not too far from us. We were lucky! It took us a further six days to get to Cairns.

“Another trip was buying the cheapest peddle bikes my friend and I could find (Big W – $50, women’s mountain bikes) and cycling from Melbourne to Adelaide over the Great Ocean Road – it was amazing!

“I will head back to Australia. I was a scuba diving instructor in Thailand and would like to dive the Great Barrier Reef, take on a bigger and better adventure/challenge there and explore the country more.

“There’s so much you can do in Australia, I could write all day. The Northern Territory captures my interest – it’s so wild and there are many adventures you could undertake up there.”

Have you explored the Northern Territory? Got any advice for Ash (and everyone else)? Tell us your tales.
