Poignant remembrance. Historical drama. Brilliantly distinctive music. And the chance to discover the meaning of ‘zenonesque’. Here’s what’s on in Hobart this April.

Earthcore 2015 – One Night In Series
Electronica, psychedelic and world music combine at the coolest of Hobart music festivals featuring Juno Reactor (of Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions soundtrack fame), Grouch, Grommet, Justin Time and Loagsta. In their early days Juno Reactor were big innovators in the Goa Scene. They have since appeared at many world festivals including Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, The Glade, Boom, Ozora and Burning Man.

Grouch aka Oscar Allison was born in New Zealand and was raised in Aotearoa. According to the official website “Grouch is a multigenre psychedelic electronic musician covering psytrance, progressive (also known as dark progressive or zenonesque), dub, breaks (breakbeat), chillout and much more”. He’s performed at festivals including Universo Paralello, Boom Festival, Ozora and Eclipse.

Earthcore One Night in Series Hobart

Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett comes to Hobart before she starts her Australian Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit Album Tour in May 2015. The tour will see her playing in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne on the 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th and 15th May respectively. Last year she performed at Coachella, Lollapalooza, The Great Escape, Primavera, Field Day and Glastonbury, and last month performed on various dates across the UK. Her new album was recorded over ten days spent in Melbourne.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service – Hobart
One day each year, all of Australia takes part in ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride for all the men and women who have fought and died in conflicts. This year, the 100th anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Gallipoli landings makes the day particularly poignant.

Where: Hobart Cenotaph, Queens Domain/ Clarence RSL/ Lindisfarne RSL/ Richmond Town Hall
When: 9am, 25 April

Camp Gallipoli
This event will be taking place at cities across Australia on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli which is remembered each year on ANZAC Day, 25 April.

It aims to provide an opportunity for groups and individuals to come together and remember the soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who fought and died in the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War.

There will be performances from Australian Idol winner Damien Leith and the Sing Australia Choir as well as from the Army/Navy band, but unlike other venues across Australia, the Hobart event will not provide the facility to camp out and sleep under the stars.

When: Friday 24 April 2015 from 4-30pm. Events begin at 5pm.
Cost: $25. Food is not included, but there will be refreshment vans on site.

Kelly
On Ned Kelly’s final night in prison before he is due to be hanged, his brother, Dan, manages to visit him at his jail by disguising himself as a priest. Dan was thought dead at the siege of Glenrowan but is very much alive and planning to head north to Queensland. Before this, however, he has come to seek Ned’s forgiveness as last time they were together, Dan had tried to shoot and kill Ned! Award winning Brisbane actor Steven Rooke plays the title role.
