Car sharing in Australia

Every hostel has a notice board. Couchsurfing, Gumtree and others have online equivalents. On them, you’ll find a cheap, sociable way of getting around. Car sharing in Australia could help you see the country for less.

Travel Australia alone and you could spend a lot of time with just your own company to keep you entertained. That’s why many travellers will offer to share their next car journey with someone willing to split the cost of petrol.

  • The host enjoys company and a lower cost journey.
  • As the sharer, you travel for far less than you would pay elsewhere – and perhaps see sights off the beaten track too.

Use the online options above to arrange car sharing in Australia. You might also find people willing to share car hire – so you split the cost and the driving.

  • Do make sure you agree the cost before you set off – that way there’ll be no nasty surprises.
  • It helps if you know the person involved, but use your own judgement. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your own instinct and find an alternative.

Hitchhiking in Australia

We wouldn’t recommend you try hitchhiking in Australia. You don’t know the person who’s letting you into their car, you can’t be sure you’ll be safe and there have been numerous instances of violent crime against hitchhikers.

Even if that doesn’t put you off, the law frequently will. Hitchhiking is illegal in Queensland and Victoria and it’s illegal to hitchhike on motorways throughout Australia.

Car sharing (ie arranged in advance, ideally with someone you know) is the much safer, legal option.
