The Savannah Way
3700km from Broome, WA to Cairns, QLD (or vice versa), passing through 15 national parks and 5 world heritage areas. Now that’s something to write home about. That’s travelling the Savannah Way.
Who can resist a road trip? This is one of the world’s greatest. It’s a fantastic way to see Australia’s hidden gems by steering you away (for the most part) from the trap of simply travelling the coast.
This is a real outback adventure in real, remote Australia. You’ll pass through rugged landscapes, desert, and the tropics. With virtually no artificial light, the night skies will be the clearest you’ve ever seen.
You’ll also discover that true Aussie hospitality is far more than a well-meaning but cursory “how’re ya goin’?”
If you came to Australia with the intention of getting beyond the cities and exploring the real country, this is one for the ‘must do’ list.
It takes around 30 days to travel the full Savannah Way route but to do it in that time you’ll be driving every day.
If you’ve got more than 30 days to play with, explore a little more and don’t worry too much about the timescales.
It really is worth it.

Planning Your Trip On The Savannah Way
Make no mistake, this is a demanding journey. You will need a 4WD and some sections of the route are impassable in the wet season.
Check which routes are suitable for the time of year.
Make a note of refuelling points – and have a plan B in case your chosen petrol station is out of fuel.
Check whether you need any permits to enter Aboriginal land.
Mobile phones are fine in towns (where you may actually find a signal), but on the road you’ll need a radio for emergencies.
Carrying a satellite phone or an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is advisable.
Also for the pack:
Sun protection
Water
Insect repellent
First-aid kit
Supplies
Important: This list is for guidance only. It’s not intended to be exhaustive.
