Global Grapevine and Affiliate Marketing
A few things you might like to know about how we use (and how we definitely don’t use) affiliate marketing.
Like most information websites, Global Grapevine carries advertising. You know how it is – we have to pay the bills too.
One of the ways we do that is by affiliate marketing. This means that our pages carry ads for products and services that might be of use to you when planning your trip to, or travelling, Australia. If you click on them (and then buy something) we’ll receive a small commission from the advertiser.
We want to be entirely clear about what’s advertising and what isn’t, and most of the time we’d expect you wouldn’t have much difficulty spotting the difference between a banner ad (like the one on the right of this page) and editorial.
But sometimes it can be a bit more difficult to tell the difference between editorial and opinion, and advertorial (ie articles created to provide information about and advertise a particular product or service).
So here’s the Global Grapevine position: we write the content we want to write and (we hope) you want to read. Our goal is to make travelling Australia an easier, more exciting, more enjoyable experience – and if carrying an ad or two on a page for a particular product or service might help, then we’ll carry it.
But we think it’s important you know that it’s the content that drives the advertising – not the other way around. So if one of our contributors writes a product review (like this one), we’ll carry the product ads – but you should know we’re not being paid by any retailer or manufacturer to say nice things about their products.
And just because we carry an ad for a company or its products – or a piece about an upcoming event – doesn’t mean we recommend them. We’re just trying to put all you’ll need to plan your Australian adventure in one place.
If we do ever publish an article that’s primarily designed to sell, we’ll say so by clearly marking the page ‘advertorial’.
